Soybean is not widely consumed as food source in the West, but it is very important food in Japan and Asian countries. Isoflavones are found in soybeans in large amount and contain phytochemical compounds with antiestrogenic, antifungal, antiviral and antioxidant activities.

Isoflavone-intake serves to protect osteoporosis since soybean isoflavones suppress bone resorption.

Etiologic data show that higher frequency of prostatic carcinoma was found in white and black people than Japanese. The Finnish people's blood contains less isoflavone than Japanese. The isoflavone contents in blood is related to carcinogenesis. It was found that it keeps a mouse liver from nitrosoamine-induced cancer to feed a soybean diet. Also, biochemical data supported these observations. One of isoflavones, Genistein, shows to inhibit the growth of human breast cancer cell, tyrosine protein kinases and to block angiogenesis. Thus, isoflavone has potentiality for protection of carcinogenesis.

Note:

Weight accurately approx. 100mg and add in 20ml of methanol/sulfuric acid/water (8:1:1). Dissolve, dilute with methanol to exactly 50ml. Stopper tightly and heat for one hour at 100 deg. C. Cool and filter this solution(=the Sample Solution).

Weigh accurately approx. each 2mg of Daidzein and Genistein (supplied by SIGMA CHEMICAL COMPANY), dissolve in 50ml of methanol(=the Standard solution).

Inject 10 micro liter of each solution to High Performance Liquid Chromatograph (HPLC) respectively. Measure the peak areas of Daidzein, Glycitein and Genistein on the chromatograms of the sample solution and Daidzein and Genistein on the chromatograms of the Standard solution.
